The procedure of extra-curricular work::

Teacher: Good evening, dear guests and students. Today we have gathered here to speak about the great singer, real star of the world, Whitney Houston. All we know that on February 11, 2012, Houston was found dead in her guest room at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, in Beverly Hills, California, of causes not immediately known. News of her death, the day before the 2012 Grammy Awards, dominated American and international media, especially cable news. So we decided to speak about her today, because we study English and we must know not only English but their culture and music too. What do you know about Whitney Houston?

Student 1: Elizabeth Houston (August 9, 1963 – February 11, 2012) was an American recording artist, actress, producer, and model. In 2009, the Guinness World Records cited her as the most-awarded female act of all time. Her awards include two Emmy Awards, six Grammy Awards, 30 Billboard Music Awards, and 22 American Music Awards, among a total of 415 career awards in her lifetime. Houston was also one of the world\’s best-selling music artists, having sold over 170 million albums, singles and videos worldwide. Houston began singing with her New Jersey church\’s junior gospel choir at age 11.After she began performing alongside her mother in night clubs in the New York City area, she was discovered by Arista Records label head Clive Davis. Houston released seven studio albums and three movie soundtrack albums, all of which have diamond, multi-platinum, platinum or gold certification.

Teacher: Let’s listen this song.

I Will Always Love You

If I should stay,
I would only be on your way.
So I\’ll go but I know I\’ll think of you
every step of the way.

And I will always love you.
Will always love you.

You, my darling you. Mmmm.

Bittersweet memories,
That is all I\’m Taking with me.
So goodbye, please don\’t cry.
We both know I\’m not what you, you need.

And I will always love you.
I will always love you.

I hope life treats you kind,
And I hope you have
All you\’ve dreamed of.
and I wish to you joy,
And happiness.
But above all this, I wish you love.

And I will always love you.
I will always love you…
I will always love you…

Student 2: Houston is the only artist to chart seven consecutive No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hits (\»Saving All My Love for You\»; \»How Will I Know\»; \»Greatest Love of All\»; \»I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)\»; \»Didn\’t We Almost Have It All\»; \»So Emotional\» and \»Where Do Broken Hearts Go\»)

. She is the second artist behind Elton John and the only female artist to have two number-one Billboard 200 Album awards (formerly \»Top Pop Album\») on the Billboard magazine year-end charts (Whitney Houston and The Bodyguard: Original Soundtrack Album). Houston\’s 1985 debut album Whitney Houston became the best-selling debut album by a female act at the time of its release. The album was named Rolling Stone\’s best album of 1986, and was ranked at number 254 on Rolling Stone\’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Her second studio album Whitney (1987) became the first album by a female artist to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 albums chart. Houston\’s crossover appeal on the popular music charts as well as her prominence on MTV, starting with her video for \»How Will I Know\», influenced several African-American female artists to follow in her footsteps.

Student 3: Whitney Houston was born on 9 August 1963 in Newark, New Jersey. Her father, John Russell Houston, was a military man and her mother, Cissy Houston, worked as a singer. Whitney’s mother, godmother and cousins were well-known people in different musical genres like gospel, soul, pop and others. Whitney was the youngest child in the family.

Student 4: When Houston was 11 she began to sing in the choir at the New Hope Baptist Church. Moreover, Whitney learned to play the piano there. Then she entered a Catholic girls’ high school in Caldwell. While there she made the acquaintance of Robyn Crawford who became her best friend. At the same time her mother taught her singing. It is also known that Whitney liked music of Roberta Flack, Chaka Khan and Gladys Knight and this had an influence on her future works.

Student 5: Cissy Houston, her mother, performed in nightclubs and Whitney often appeared on stage with her. When Houston was 14 she sang with the Michael Zager Band. It was the single “Life’s a Party”. Afterwards Zager offered Whitney a recording contract but her mother was against because Houston had to finish school.

Student 6: A year later she began to cooperate with Chaka Khan. Subsequently the song “I’m Every Woman” was included in The Bodyguard soundtrack album.

In the early eighties Whitney began to work as a fashion model. She cooperated with different fashion magazines like Cosmopolitan, Glamour and others. At the same time she worked with producers Martin Bisi, Bill Laswell and Michael Beinhorn. In 1983 head of Arista Records Clive Davis made the acquaintance of Houston. He admired her talent and offered a recording contract. Whitney signed it. The first song was “Hold me” and she sang it with Teddy Pendergrass. This proj ect made her famous.

Its lead single \»I Will Always Love You\», became the best-selling single by a female artist in music history. With the album, Houston became the first act (solo or group, male or female) to sell more than a million copies of an album within a single week period. The album makes her the top female act in the top 10 list of the best-selling albums of all time, at number four.

Teacher: Let’s listen her another song.

I have nothing

Share my life,
Take me for what I am.
\’Cause I\’ll never change
All my colors for you.

Take my love,
I\’ll never ask for too much,
Just all that you are
And everything that you do.

I don\’t really need to look
Very much further,
I don\’t wanna have to go
Where you don\’t follow.
I will hold it back again,
This passion inside.
Can\’t run from myself,
There\’s nowhere to hide.

Don\’t make me close one more door,
I don\’t wanna hurt anymore.
Stay in my arms if you dare,
Or must I imagine you there.
Don\’t walk away from me.
I have nothing, nothing, nothing
If I don\’t have you, you.

You see through,
Right to the heart of me.
You break down my walls
With the strength of your love.

I never knew
Love like I\’ve known it with you.
Will a memory survive,
One I can hold on to?

I don\’t really need to look
Very much further,
I don\’t wanna have to go
Where you don\’t follow.
I will hold it back again,
This passion inside.
Can\’t run from myself,
There\’s nowhere to hide.

Don\’t make me close one more door,
I don\’t wanna hurt anymore.
Stay in my arms if you dare,
Or must I imagine you there.
Don\’t walk away from me.
I have nothing, nothing, nothing

Don\’t make me close one more door,
Stay in my arms if you dare,
Or must I imagine you there.
Don\’t walk away from me.
Don\’t walk away from me.

Don\’t you dare walk away from me
I have nothing, nothing, nothing
If I don\’t have you, you

I don\’t wanna hurt anymore.

Student 8: Houston continued to star in movies and contribute to their soundtracks, including the films Waiting to Exhale (1995) and The Preacher\’s Wife (1996). The Preacher\’s Wife soundtrack became the best-selling gospel album in history.[9] Three years after the release of her fourth studio album My Love Is Your Love (1998), she renewed her recording contract with Arista Records.[9] She released her fifth studio album Just Whitney in 2002, and the Christmas-themed One Wish: The Holiday Album in 2003. In 2009, Houston released her seventh studio album I Look to You.

Teacher: Student of our group Rzaeva Esmeralda wants to sing one of her songs

Unbreak my heart

Don\’t leave me in all this pain
Don\’t leave me out in the rain
Come back and bring back my smile
Come and take these tears away
I need your arms to hold me now
The nights are so unkind
Bring back those nights when I held you beside me

Unbreak my heart
Say you\’ll love me again
Undo this hurt you caused
When you walked out the door
And walked out of my life
Uncry these tears
I cried so many nights
Unbreak my heart
My heart

Take back that sad word good-bye
Bring back the joy to my life
Don\’t leave me here with these tears
Come and kiss this pain away
I can\’t forget the day you left
Time is so unkind
And life is so cruel without you here beside me

Unbreak my heart
Say you\’ll love me again
Undo this hurt you caused
When you walked out the door
And walked out of my life
Uncry these tears
I cried so many nights
Unbreak my heart
My heart

Don\’t leave me in all this pain
Don\’t leave me out in the rain
Bring back the nights when I held you beside me

Unbreak my heart
Say you\’ll love me again
Undo this hurt you caused
When you walked out the door
And walked out of my life
Uncry these tears
I cried so many, many nights
Unbreak my

Unbreak my heart
Come back and say you love me
Unbreak my heart
Sweet darlin\’
Without you I just can\’t go on
Can\’t go on

Teacher: Thank you very much for your attention. I hope that you will listen Whitney’s songs, because she will always be one of the best singers in the world and we shall always remember her…
